Old Corkscrew Golf Club Host Site For United States Amateur Sectional Qualifier

Estero, Florida, July 15, 2010 – Old Corkscrew Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus ‘Signature Design’ golf course, will be the regional qualifying host site for the United States Golf Association Amateur Championship.  The two day event is scheduled for July 26th & 27th, with players who qualify from this region moving on to compete for the national championship. 

Regarding the event, “Old Corkscrew Golf Club is a great test of golf.  Having qualified and experienced this challenging course, players who move on and advance from this section will be well prepared to compete at Chambers Bay, which is the host site for the 2010 United States Golf Association Amateur Championship” said Peter Dachison, Tournament Director, Florida State Golf Association.  

Chamber Bay is located in University Park, which is suburb of Tacoma, Washington.  This magnificent and stunning venue is managed by Kemper Sports, will also host the 2015 United States Open Championship.

‘We are honored to host the regional qualifier for our Men’s Amateur Championship.  In preparation, we have planned our summer aerification schedule around this marquee event so course conditions will be at an optimum.  Leading up to and during the event, greens will be groomed, double cut and rolled to insure player’s have superlative putting conditions.  Grassy shoulders that border greens near water hazards have been allowed to grow which will lend to friendlier result.  As a result, player’s short game skills – pitching and chipping talents will be put to the test”, stated Mark Iwinski, General Manager of Old Corkscrew Golf Club.            

This award winning course has been recognized by the National Golf Course Owners Association as the 2008 Florida Golf Course of the Year and Golf Digest listed it as one of America’s Best New Courses in 2007.  Since opening, Old Corkscrew has already hosted the FSGA – Florida State Senior Open; the FSGA – Florida State Amateur Championship, the PGA – Southern Florida Sectional Junior Tournament; along with many others.
